Digital lecture - The Rise and Fall of Dutch Statesman Johan de Witt

2025 it is 400 years since the birth of Johan de Witt. He came to have an important role in the history of the Netherlands. Dutch Historian Arnout van Cruyningen will tell us about him. The lecture is for free and will be held in English.

About

Johan de Witt, whose 400th birthday is commemorated this year, is widely regarded to have been one of the most important statesmen in Dutch history. Yet after many years in public office he and his brother Cornelis in 1672 were gruesomely slaughtered by an angry mob in The Hague. In this lecture we will explore how Johan de Witt became so powerful in the 17th century Netherlands as well as why in the end he was so deeply hated by many of his countrymen.

The lecture is organized by Mårten Hougström in cooperation with Medborgarskolan.

Lecturer

Arnout van Cruyningen lives in Wijchen, the Netherlands. He is an expert on the history of Europe's Royal Families and the institution of Monarchy, and the author of several books on the House of Oranje-Nassau and the history of the Netherlands, as well as a large number of articles and book reviews in national and international magazines.
